The role of a consulting business analyst is so varied from one organisation to the other and project to project. It's hard to come up with a one size fits all definition. Consulting Business Analysts focus on identifying inefficiencies and finding solutions and formulate plans for a company to move forward. I work on fixing financial inefficiencies within a company. In fact, this makes up a large portion of a consulting business analyst's duties. I have extensive knowledge of business finances to accurately analyse the marketplace and expenses. I then make suggestions and outline a plan to fix any identified inefficiencies and unnecessary expenses.

Some of my key tasks include (but not limited to)

  • analysis of business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

  • business analysis of the client requirement and prepare required documents for business processes and execution of same

  • analyze business processes and provide consultation for functional requirement of process

  • perform analysis on various business processes, identify root cause and prepare data to improve process

  • review profit margins and make recommendations for profit improvement

  • restructures - assist human resource department and other groups and perform analysis and recommend ways to increase efficiency

  • prepare project plans and activities and evaluate plans for various meetings and provide consultation of process

In simple terms a consulting business analyst partners with the clients and the internal teams to deliver the best solution to the client. I act as a liaison between the client and the internal team that actually works on the project. I work directly with employees or at arms length if necessary. I determine inefficiencies. This is done by analyzing the needs of the clients and determining if the business meets those needs as efficiently as possible. Examples of solving employee related inefficiencies include expanding staff in an overworked department, downsizing a little-used department to save money or assigning work to different employees to optimize workload output.

My responsibilities typically include identifying the problem that the client is trying to solve, gather requirements, communicate the requirements to the technical team and create a win win situation for client and the technical team by overseeing the solution delivery process.

Here are some examples of how it varies organisation to organisation, project to project.

On the first role, it was Requirement gathering and enhancement of the product. On the second role it was designing the product and making sure the stakeholders understand the requirement. On the third role, it was business restructure role Currently I am taking Care of Business Management (Paper work and Process Systems, Knowledge Transition Etc. ).

Businesses can hire analysts from within the company, but consultants typically come from outside firms. Consultants specialise in optimising the manner that businesses run. Business analysts, on the other hand, usually come from within a company. IT departments have full-time employees that can act as analysts to oversee technology on a daily basis. Consultants are typically called on to look at the big picture and fix existing problems, not to oversee daily finances. The Business Minder in Asia is your local mobile Consulting Business Analyst.
